In 2024, NAOC will be holding our December Board Meeting in conjunction with the Army Military Munitions Safety Standdown (referred to as M2S2) Technical Meeting in Huntsville, Alabama at Redstone Arsenal.

The membership committee has identified the Embassy Suites by Hilton Huntsville as the venue to hold our Board Meeting and a Reception/Networking event, but at this time we are not planning to hold separate technical sessions in December. Stay tuned for more details.

Schedule: Tuesday December 10th through Thursday December 12th in Huntsville, AL at Redstone Arsenal:

  • The December Board of Directors Meeting and an evening Reception will be held Tuesday December 10th at the Embassy Suites.
  • A discounted Room Block for NAOC members has been coordinated for the length of the M2S2 meeting.

Registration for the December 2024 Military Munitions Support Services (M2S2) Stand down is now open. 

This forum will bring together USACE, DoD leaders, federal land managers, state and federal regulators and contractors to discuss munitions response cleanup issues and initiatives, share programmatic information, and share lessons learned to foster strong working relationships.

The NAOC President and Membership Committee have been in contact with the Army during their planning and have received the following requests for the NAOC Membership.

The Army is asking for volunteers from our membership to present during the M2S2 Meeting in one of their breakout sessions:

  • Interesting Case Studies
  • Geographic Information Systems
  • MEC Feasibility Studies
  • Innovative solutions to difficult problems
  • Underwater Technologies & Case Studies
  • All Things AGC
  • Explosives Safety
  • Munitions Constituents
  • MR-QAPP
  • Cost Engineering

If a NAOC member wants to present a topic that may not fit in to a session listed above, they are open to suggestions.

The Army is also looking for speakers for the special interest topics listed below, focused on project examples. The speaker can either collaborate with a DoD counterpart (preferred) or present independently.

  • Planning and managing survey units and delivery units, and mapping SUs and DUs to payment milestones
  • Lessons learned in using SLAM
  • Lessons learned in using drones
  • Areas for improvement when undertaking a remedial action phased approach
  • Site-specific FS alternatives that focus on the risk scenarios at complex sites
  • Lessons learned in 3rd-party validation seeding
  • Lessons learned/contrasts between 3rd-party validation seeding and in-house validation seeding.

Requirements for presenters: 

  • Talks including information from DoD-funded work will require the approval of the DoD project manager/DoD proponent/contracting officer.
  • Presentations will be due by 15 November for USACE review (on/about 26 November 2024). They envisage comments would be limited but would need to be resolved before the event. A website will be provided for presenters to upload their talks.
